SYNOPS
Outline
The first act
Peasant guy Nemorino from a small village near Florence loves his fellow villager Adina very much. How to earn the favor of beauty? This thought haunts Nemorino. Here and now, hiding behind a high fence, he listens to Adina's conversation with her friend Janette. Both of them are passionate about the ancient legend of Tristan and Isolde. From their words Nemorino learns about a certain wonderful elixir: - "As soon as Tristan drank it, Isolde instantly fell in love!" He decides to get a saving elixir at any cost.
The sounds of the drum are heard, and soldiers enter the village under the command of sergeant Belkore. A pretty and brisk Adina immediately attracts attention of brave leader. He presents her with a bouquet of flowers, forcing Nemorino to be tormented with jealousy.
Belcore is not going to think long: let Adina immediately appoint a wedding day! However, the girl does not like the sergeant's self-confidence. She rejects his courtship. Peasants tease unsuccessful lover Nemorino. The time will come, and Sergeant Belcore will conquer the beauty - that's when all will laugh at Nemorino.
The whole village is excited by the appearance of a richly dressed man. The stranger appears to be the wandering doctor Dulkamara, who brought with him not only medicines. He also has a rare drug - a love drink. And it is quite inexpensive. Sale of "balms" is in full swing. Unfortunate Nemorino also appeals for help to the doctor. He needs the drink that "sparked on Isolde." Without any embarrassment, Dulcamara hands the bottle of ordinary wine to the lover, but warns that it is possible to drink the "wonderful elixir" only in a day. During this time, the rogue hopes to be far from these places. Nemerino's impatience is so great that, without waiting for the day to pass, he drinks the contents of the bottle. The "elixir" affects very quickly... Surprised Adina sees a dramatic change in the behavior of Nemorino. The guy suddenly cheered up, jokes, laughs, waving his arms... What's wrong with him? He does not even look in her side! He loudly declares that by morning he will be completely healed of love. The arrival of a brave sergeant tells Adina how to repay Nemorino. She promises her hand to Belcore.
Suddenly, the sergeant is ordered to step out of the village as soon as dawn begins. Completely annoyed by indifference of Nemorino, Adina agrees to fix the wedding with the sergeant today. Hop is immediately eroded from the head of Nemorino. Realizing that forever loses his beloved, the unfortunate guy begs her to wait with the wedding at least until tomorrow. "Yes, he was completely stupid," Adina laughs, thinking that she can change her mind. A delighted sergeant invites all present to the wedding.
The second act
The yard in front of the house of Adina is filled with guests. Dulkamara is in the most prominent place - fun and carefree singing a song with Adina.
Nemorino has his own worries. He urgently needs money. After all, without them, he can not get the next portion of a saving drink. And time does not wait. A little more, and Adina will become the wife of this fanfaron. Belcore promises to get money. Let Nemorino enroll in the recruits, and he will be given twenty scudi. The guy hesitates, but, nevertheless, the decision is made. One stroke of the pen and Nemorino is enlisted in the soldiers. Clutching in his hand precious coins, he goes to search for Dulcamara. The sergeant, who has got the new recruit and has cleaned the opponent from the road, escorts the simpleton with a mocking glance.
Suddenly interesting news flies the whole village: Nemorino’s uncle died in Milan, leaving the young man all his fortune. There are people, who do not believe this, but ... the news comes from the letter-deliverer, and he certainly knows where the truth is, and where the fiction is.
Only Nemorino, reinforced by the doctor's "love drink," not aware of the latest developments. Dulcamara vouched that this time the drug will act necessarily, and the guy is full of the most iridescent expectations. Indeed, the first girl, who met on his way - she turned out to be Janette - is showing increased attention to him. Well, he is a rich groom now... Nemorino takes all courtesies and compliments for granted. He prefers not to notice Adina at all.
Dulcamara is amazed. It seems that the contents of the bottle really turned out to be magical. "Do not you also try a miracle elixir, Adine?" - he suggests the girl. But she refuses: believing in the power of her feelings, she does not need the services of a magician. Having called Nemorino, Adina gives him the recruit's receipt she bought from Belkore: the money has been returned to the sergeant, and the young man is free. Nemorino surprised so much when he hears in addition that a proud beauty loves him, and agrees to a marriage. Peasants open another news to lucky Nemorino: henceforth he is the owner of a large fortune.
Sergeant Belkore is not long in despair, there are many other women in the world... Dulkamara, convincing everyone that thanks to the "love drink" the lovers are connected, quickly sells out the remaining bottles. Peasants cheerfully greet the young couple.
