SUMMARY.
The action takes place in Germany in the Middle Ages.
Dr. Faust all his life persistently tried to learn the secrets of the universe, but, realizing the futility of the human mind, science, he decided to part with life. The goblet of poison trembles in his hands. He appeals to the evil spirit, cursing the earth, dreams and the thirst for knowledge, cursing God... Mephistopheles appears before the old man. Satan offers the old man wealth, fame, and power. Only one thing can attract Faust - youth. Seduced by the beautiful image of Margaret, he makes a deal with the devil and in exchange for his youth sells his soul to him.
The square of a small German town. Valentin, Margaret's brother, goes to war, and her beloved sister is left all alone. Mephistopheles appears, evil and caustic, he mocks the power of almighty gold, condemning "the whole mankind" to grief and bloodshed. Gradually, everyone guesses - Satan is in front of them. Highly raising the cruciform arms of swords, they drive away the devil.
Faust is looking forward to meeting with Margaret. He is fascinated and distressed: the beauty rejected him. Mephistopheles promises Faust to help conquer the girl's heart.
Faust and Mephistopheles are in the garden. They hear Zibel's heartfelt confessions and see a bouquet intended for Margaret. The heart of Faust seizes jealousy. But Mephistopheles promises companion success. He is sure: the beautiful gifts of Faust will seduce the young beauty.
Margaret is excited about meeting with a stranger. Near the house, she notices Zibel's bouquet, and next to it is Mephistopheles' mysterious drawer. Yielding to temptation, she tries on jewels. Neighbor Martha comes into the garden of Margaret. Mephistopheles brought unkind news to Martha: her husband passed away. A frivolous woman hints to Satan that she is ready to make him a pair. Faust and Margaret, left alone, are at the mercy of witchcraft.
In God's temple, Margaret tries to ease the prayer of the soul. But in response, hearing the terrible words of Mephistopheles: “You have fallen from heaven and you are betrayed to hell!” – she falls unconscious.
Valentin returns from the war. He hurries to his beloved sister and finds out that Faust brought shame and disgrace to their home. Valentine and Faust enter into a duel. Under the protection of Mephistopheles, Faust inflicts a fatal sword blow on Valentine. Valentine curses Margaret and predicts a shameful death for her.
Margaret lost her mind: in a moment of despair, she killed her newborn child. Mad declared a criminal and imprisoned. She is waiting for execution. Refusing to run with Faust, Margaret dies. But with her death ends the youth of Faust. According to the contract, the former doctor Faust follows Mephistopheles.
Deaf place in the mountains. Mephistopheles leads Faust here on Walpurgis Night. He is surrounded by beautiful witches, bacchantes, satires, and nymphs. Devilish Sabbath begins.
