The peasant lad Nemorino from a small village near Florence in love with a beautiful Adina. Nemorino wants nothing more than to be with Adina. And even now he spies on Adina from a distance as she reads her friend Giannetta the story of Tristan and Isolde – of the magician who gave Tristan a magic love potion to remedy his unrequited love for Isolde.
As Adina reads the story to her workers, Nemorino convinces himself that he needs a love potion to win her heart - just like Tristan and Islode.
Hearing the sounds of the drum. This is a Sergeant Belcore with his troop come into the village. His attention immediately attracts beautiful and perky Adina. He gave her a bouquet of flowers, making Nemorino tormented by jealousy.Belcore is not going to wait any longer: Adina must immediately appoint their wedding day! But the girl does not like his arrogance and she rejects his advances.“Doctor” Dulcamara, a traveling salesman, arrives in grand fashion and presents his wares and elixirs to the townspeople. He claims to have a supply of cure-all potions, and after making a persuasive presentation, quickly sells many bottles to gullible villagers. The lovesick Nemorino asks Dulcamara if he possesses a love potion similar to Tristan and Isolde's. Dulcamara tells Nemorino that he, in fact, has a draught that will do the trick. He sells the love elixir to Nemorino for all the money Nemorino has in his pockets. Without hesitation, Nemorino gives Dulcamara all he has and downs the liquid within moments of acquiring it. Little does he know that the elixir was only wine. Before Nemorino becomes drunk, Dulcamara tells him the potion will take effect in one days time before he hastily makes an exit. When Adina enters, Nemorino, certain that the potion will work, pretends to ignore her. Adina becomes angry at Nemorino's new attitude and decides to punish him by marrying Sgt. Belcore. Suddenly the sergeant received order: return to his garrison, as soon will dawn and so must marry her at once.
Nemorino, dismayed by this turn of events, urges Adina to wait just one more day, but she spitefully ignores him and invites the entire village to the wedding. Nemorino is appalled and begs her to wait another day (to allow time for the potion to work), but Adina is adamant. Delighted sergeant invites the entire village to the wedding.
Adina’s house. Everyone is celebrating at the pre-wedding feast at Adinas house. Adina secretly wishes Nemorino had come so she could enjoy her revenge. Dulcamara sings a flirtatious duet with Adina (“Io son ricco e tu sei bella”), to great applause.
Nemorino arrives, fearing that he is too late to prevent the wedding. Seeing Dulcamara, he begs for another bottle of the magic elixir, but Dulcamara won’t give it to him until he can pay for it. Nemorino tells him that he is despondent because he has no money. Belcore advises him to join the army, where he can instantly earn 20 scudi. Nemorino is reluctant, but Belcore persuades him with a vision of the glories (and opportunities for winning the ladies) of being a military man. Nemorino enlists and takes the money, thrilled at the prospect of winning Adina. Belcore secretly plumes himself on having recruited his rival and getting him out of the way. Gossip is spreading around the village that Nemorino’s uncle has died and left him a large legacy. When Nemorino appears, drunk again after buying another large "love potion" from Dulcamara, the women flock to his side. They flirt and coo over him leading him to think the potion is working. Dr Dulcamara is amazed at the sight.
Adina arrives and sees Nemorino acting differently than before. She asks Dulcamara about Nemorino and he tells her that the foolish boy has spent all his money and even joined the army in order to buy a love potion for some woman. Realizing that she is the woman, she regrets teasing and acting indifferently towards Nemorino. She realizes that his love for her is real.
She rejects Dulcamara's sales pitch of a potion of her own by telling him that she has her own means of gaining Nemorino's love. She buys back his enlistment papers in order to release him, and he is moved to notice the single tear on her cheek (‘Una furtiva lagrima’), indicating that his love for her is returned. She confesses her love for him and they finally embrace.
Farmers reveal the news of Nemorino’s inheritance, which neither Adina nor Nemorino had yet heard. Appearing Sgt. Belcore proclaims there are plenty of women in the world from which to choose. Dulcamara spins a new sales pitch crediting Nemorino's happy ending to Dulcamara's love potion. Dulcamara sells dozens of bottles before leaving the small town.
And the villagers celebrate the happy couple’s wedding.
